Sacramento County deputies are working a gunfire incident that unfolded Saturday night April 18 at Howe Park in Sacramento at the moment law enforcement were clearing an unsanctioned gathering of several hundred people.
What Led to the Shooting
Deputies were first called to the park on Howe Avenue just after 6:30 PM after receiving reports of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. After that, a second caller reported concerning a possible fight taking place at the location.
A law enforcement helicopter flew over the park but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Nevertheless, it was evident that an enormous crowd had gathered click here without authorization without authorization.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Officers set about removing people from the park by forming a perimeter and broadcasting over loudspeakers telling the hundreds present to vacate the area. Roughly 15 minutes were allotted for the crowd to leave.
As the crowd was being cleared that an estimated 20 to 25 shots were discharged. The barrage of gunfire sent the crowd running in all directions. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies wasted no time in locating gunshot victims.
Those Who Were Hit
By the time the scene was secured, four gunshot victims were located with gunshot injuries. The victims — a group of one female and three male victims ranging in age through their in their twenties — were airlifted or driven to area medical facilities. Hospital staff indicated that two victims were in serious condition, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one had injuries classified as minor. According to authorities, all four were in stable condition.
Sacramento fire crews provided support and helped triage the four victims at the scene.
Evidence at the Scene
Most of the gunfire was confirmed to have occurred near the Cottage Way side of the park adjacent to the local Home Depot located at the 2200 block of Howe Ave. CSI personnel discovered more spent casings scattered along Cottage Way. Ballistic damage were identified in the iron fence alongside the nearby Home Depot. This ballistic evidence pointed to that one of the gunmen had been aiming south from Cottage Way toward the Home Depot. The Home Depot was temporarily locked down for a period of time. Crime scene technicians and detectives stayed at the location through the early morning hours.
Detainees in Solano County
Intelligence received over scanner radio traffic confirmed that a vehicle identified as a Kia was contacted by law enforcement in nearby Solano County. Four individuals were held for questioning. Law enforcement units were sent to retrieve the detainees to bring the suspects back for formal questioning. Video that was reviewed established that the shooting involved two separate gunmen.
